Poser software is a pioneer in the creation of digital humans. Its versatility and ease of use brought human creation to the masses almost 30 years ago and has attracted a wide variety of creators, from different backgrounds. This time we would like to introduce you to Melissa (ArtByMel). Melissa, makes fantasy art and nature art using Poser with other applications such as Photoshop, as well as nature backgrounds. Those who are into fantasy art (elves, Valkyries, warriors, etc.) will surely find ArtByMel’s gallery inspiring.

Can you tell us an introduction about yourself?

ArtByMel: I'm a longtime 3D artist living NE of Philly, PA. I'm quite fortunate to live in an area that has fertile farms surrounded by lush mountains and forests.

How and when did you get involved in computer graphics and Poser?

ArtByMel: Many years ago I created and ran a guild on AOL for advanced role players. That was about the time that suddenly there were websites popping up and that's how it all started. I made an elaborate, quite decorative website for my guild.

What are your favorite Poser features and why? What tools do you find yourself using the most?

ArtByMel: I do not really have many favorites, basically indirect lighting and dynamic clothing, both of which I use heavily.

"I think it's a little easier to break into 3D with Poser than anything else."

What workflow do you follow when working on a project? How does the creative process work?

ArtByMel: It all starts with a vision in my head and then I do my best to bring it to life in Poser and sometimes import it into Vue. I've recently reinstalled Carrara and that will make its way into the pipeline. As far as premade backgrounds go, I've made a lot of my own for use in Poser. Lighting as well. I do all my own lighting for years now.

Where do you get your inspiration?

ArtByMel: Everywhere. The woods have always been a great source of inspiration for me. Sometimes a simple word or turn of phrase sets me into motion. On occasion, inspiration comes from a dream I had. Fantasy is also a heavy inspiration for me.

What software applications do you use (Photoshop, etc.), and how do you combine them to make your art?

ArtByMel: Poser, Vue, Photoshop and I've begun to incorporate AI into the mix. I never create a 3D render without polishing done in Photoshop as I prefer more of a painterly look.

Do you have a dream project you would like to make someday?

ArtByMel: Yes. My dream project is getting my artwork on the splash screen of a video game for PlayStation.

Do you have a wish list of things where you would like to see Poser improve?

ArtByMel: Heck yes! RENDER PAUSE and RESUME!! Vue has that wonderful feature and it's extremely useful.

How would you convince someone new to 3D graphics to try out Poser?

ArtByMel: I think it's a little easier to break into 3D with Poser than anything else. It's a fairly user-friendly interface.
